Internship Program

The Southern District of Ohio United States Probation Office encourages undergraduate and graduate students in the fields of Corrections, Criminal Justice, or the Social Services to apply for the Student Internship Program. The program includes hands on experience with United States Probation Officers with the students receiving training in various job functions associated with a career in corrections.

WHO SHOULD APPLY:
At the present time the Student Internship Program is being offered to undergraduate and graduate students in the fields of Corrections and Criminal Justice and other Social Service Programs, whose students are committed to a career in corrections and criminal justice. It is anticipated that selection will be highly competitive and based upon grade point average, experiences that may indicate a commitment to the fields of Corrections and Criminal Justice, letters of interest, recommendations; and some interviewing and testing that will be done at the Probation Offices of internship.

HOW TO APPLY:
Students should contact their department or school liaison person for initial referral authorization. The school liaison person will have some of the forms which should be completed.

After receiving authorization the student should submit:

  1. A letter of Interest which will contain verification from the faculty liaison person (by signature) that the student qualifies and is recommended for the program
  2. An employment application
  3. A resume
  4. A copy of undergraduate and graduate transcripts
  5. A school term paper, written by the applicant on any subject (preferably in a human services field)
  6. A Student internship informational form
  7. Three personal references (can be included in the letter of interest)

The Columbus office had three interns in the Spring 2003 program, which ran from April to June 2003. The interns worked in the presentence and supervision functions of the Probation Department. Each intern accepted into the program is assigned to a mentor.


Brianna Michalak, during her internship she worked with the presentence function, which included assisting with collateral investigations and obtaining local court records for inclusion in presentence investigation reports. Brianna's mentors were UPSOs Beth Williams Harris and David Walden.


Tom Eberz, assisting with caseload supervision with USPO Amy Rizor.


Sarah Keil worked with the supervision team and assisted in collateral investigation. She worked with USPO Rick Lenhart.
